Love is supposed to be one of the places where we surrender power. We open ourselves to another person, allow ourselves to be seen, and accept the terrifying possibility that what we love can also leave us. But love has a shadow, and on September 15, Venus in Scorpio squares Pluto in Aquarius, forcing us to look directly at the place where love and power become almost impossible to separate. The square becomes exact with Venus and Pluto at approximately 3° Scorpio and Aquarius.
Venus entered Scorpio on September 10, and Venus in Scorpio does not particularly care for polite affection. It wants intimacy, truth, loyalty and depth. It wants to know what exists underneath the words. Pluto in Aquarius is equally uninterested in appearances. Pluto exposes what has been buried, particularly the hidden structures of power operating beneath what we tell ourselves is happening. Put these two into a square and relationships become mirrors. Money becomes a mirror. Desire becomes a mirror. What we value becomes a mirror.
This is where the questions become uncomfortable. What are you calling love that is actually possession? What are you calling loyalty that is actually fear? What are you calling desire that has quietly become control? And just as importantly, where have you surrendered your own power because losing someone frightened you more than losing yourself?
Pluto has a way of finding the bargain underneath the bargain. We say we gave because we loved, but sometimes we gave because we wanted to be indispensable. We say we stayed because we were loyal, when part of us was terrified of beginning again. We say we forgave, but quietly kept the debt alive. We say we want someone to be free, while secretly wanting their freedom to lead directly back to us. Venus square Pluto isn’t interested in condemning these contradictions. It exposes them.
This does not belong only to romantic relationships. Venus also rules what we value, including money, beauty, pleasure and self-worth. Power can hide inside financial dependence. It can hide inside friendship, status, sexuality, generosity and even beauty itself. Who gets to decide what is desirable? Who benefits when we believe we aren’t enough? Who has power because we have decided that we need something only they can give us?
That last question matters because need and love are not the same thing. Neither are intensity and intimacy. Something can consume us without nourishing us. Someone can desire us without seeing us. A relationship can be extraordinarily passionate and still be built around control. Pluto strips away the romance of obsession and asks what remains when possession is removed from the equation.
There is another reason September 15 matters. This isn’t a single encounter between Venus and Pluto. Because Venus will retrograde this fall, she will square Pluto three times: September 15, October 20 while retrograde, and December 9 after turning direct. We are not being handed one dramatic astrological afternoon. We are entering a story.
That makes this first square the revelation. Something may become visible now that we will be asked to examine more deeply later. A relationship dynamic. A financial arrangement. An attraction. A resentment. A question of worth. A realization about who holds the power and why. The point isn’t to immediately destroy whatever comes under scrutiny. The point is to notice it, because Venus will return to this exact conversation.
That is what makes retrogrades so fascinating. They take what we thought was settled and walk us back through it. When Venus reaches Pluto again on October 20, she will be moving backward through Scorpio. By then, whatever September introduced may look very different. And when the final square arrives in December, the question will no longer be simply what did you discover? It will be what are you going to do with what you now know?
This also continues the larger story we have been following. The Pisces eclipse showed us what was finished. Mars square Saturn asked whether we had learned enough not to recreate what we had just left behind. Now Venus and Pluto go deeper. Why were we attached to it in the first place?
That question can change everything, because sometimes we aren’t attached to the person, possession or situation itself. We are attached to who we believed we were when we had it. We are attached to being chosen. Being needed. Being admired. Being safe. Being right. Being desired. Being indispensable. Pluto takes us underneath the object of desire and asks us to find the hunger beneath it.
The answer is not to stop loving deeply. Scorpio would never ask that, and neither would Pluto. The answer is to love without confusing depth with captivity. To desire without believing desire gives us ownership. To give without creating invisible debts. To stay because we choose to stay, not because fear has convinced us there is nowhere else to go.
September 15 begins that examination. We will return to it in October and again in December.
Sometimes Pluto doesn’t take love away. It takes away everything we mistook for love so that we can finally see what remains.
